Like the voyage which carried Charles Darwin around the world, the HMS Beagle Project is a truly international initiative. We work with global partners who share our vision, and the new Beagle will sail in all regions of the world, enabling scientists, learners and the general public to engage with our programmes.

AUSTRALIA

Renewing connections

Project co-founder David Lort-Phillips’s ancestor, John Lort Stokes, shared a cabin with Darwin and later discovered and named Port Darwin (as was). Fast-forward to a well-received event, an international science conference and a new  Beagle voice…

BRAZIL

Links with space

Supported by a British Council Darwin Now grant, the Project set up an international genetics workshop plus a live astronaut Q&A between the International Space Station and local schoolchildren in Paraty, a HMS Beagle port of call. Read more

CHILE

A cutting-edge research vessel

The Fundación Beagle is raising funds for a new Educational Science Outreach Centre and is also working with educators to develop regional science and learning programmes along the country’s 4,000-mile coast.

CHINA

100 million viewers

In 2009, the Project and British Council’s Darwin Now project took part in events and a CCTV10 documentarywith an estimated audience of 100 million children and teachers; we will explore further educational partnerships here.

COSTA RICA

Working for people and the environment

Project director Liza Lort-Phillips works with Latin America’s top business school and the public, private and third sector, combining ethics and ingenuity to build sustainable supply chains.

EASTERN USA

Science both local and global

HMS Beagle Project director and co-founder Karen James is a visiting scientist at Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine and is a key contributor to the International Barcode of Lifegroup.

GERMANY

The master shipbuilder

The new Beagle concept has been assisted by Detlev Loell and partners, a German firm with long experience in designing, engineering and rigging tall ships, naval training ships and super-yachts. Read more
